Was going to going to present my process has a PDF on a CD to come with my portfolio but it was abit late to because I did know it I could on time. However, this is a break down of everything organised per project;
BALSA PLANE INSTRUCTION MANUAL
My line up of projects deals more with everyday life and how we live life. Many times I have even stumbled into interest I never knew I had. For example, the Contemporary Bible project putting myself in the position of working with the text from the Bible I discover the value of typography as a stand-a-lone medium to communicate effectively. That means I have more respect for typography now.
When I notice myself finding it relevant for us to have a cheque booklet that allow you make promises, then I realise that our word are more than what we think of it, it should have depth, meaning, purpose and definitely should be fulfilled. Just like the quote that says “action speaks louder than words”, the cheque help see that you act according to what you have writen on the cheque, just like the normal bank cheque works.
My power of words has extended and followed through to my other projects, redefining the reading experience with The Book of Genesis and the Contemporary Bible both mainly dealing with the text of the Bible. The fundalmental for this interest is reflected with my religious practise as a Christian, which the Bible is major in it’s practise. I have strong values for the text of the Bible and its because it’s part of me at all times.
The lessons leant in Christianity has contribute in how I approach my brief/projects, it allows me to look at things from a different view and be innovative. And most times my view are not nessecarily the ones people have consider but when you look at them from the way I have tackled them then it’s worth giving a second look.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION & PROCESS
This project deals more with the layout of the Bible. Took off for the What if project but more context I made it self initiated project.
The what if was to make the Bible layout into church plans, layout being specific to that assembly. However, in the experimentation stage a made made a layout not really speacific to anything, printed it on tracing paper and binded into a book placing scrape paper inbetween. It begin to look like a contemporary Bible because of the involvment of the scrape paper. Also translated as it will feel reading the Bible in our contemporary world.
I kept it simple by working towards a contemporary Bible, through layout and binding. With the possibility of breaking the original Bible.
The overlap text with the bold quote and the normal (small) text represent the compromise between the two system; the world (physical) and the Christianity (spiritual). Bringing them together so that both can partake of the text.
The success of this project is the consistence experimentation of various layout and style and material. If I was to work futher on this project I will challenge it with materials, object to bring both system even more closer the this Bible beside the binding.
From this project I have learnt that process gives maximum result.
As I said this project begin with a what if project which was, What if the Bible was in the layout of the Church.
Went to the library to photograph and look more into contemporary Church buildings and aspect that could form the grid for this Bible.
These are some of the photos

The object aspect

The Floor Plan aspect

The Window Aspect - The window allow light into the building and light in Christianity represents; insight, revelation and the Bible is seen as a material that gives light. So I thought I could show the Bible text where light is entering in the Church.
More church photo

Research on two major modern architecture that work with spiritual space.

The chapel of NOTRE DAME DU HAUT in Ronchamp by Franco-Swiss architect Le Corbusier. This chapel has a very strong light representation through its windows.

Inside - strong lighting.

Monastery Design by John Pawson. Very go use of contemporary use of material. Almost look like a home but contain Church features.

After advice and feedback I begin to recognise that more interest goes to something people can relate to. And floor plan was one of the recognise aspect of the Church people relate with more.
Chose to work on the floor plan of St Paul but for some reason I was not able to explore with the plan, it was really stagnate and it was getting frustrating.
I was a good thing that I still keep exploring and carrying out relevant research towards what am trying to show. I was also a good thing I revisit the purpose of what am trying to do.

INSIDE 2
This is like a physical experimentation of the Bible in the contemporary world looks like this. I printed the Bible text on tracing paper, then gathered some scrape papers from around my college that was filled with alot of typography, printings, illustrations, design e.t.c. And the bible text was printed on tracing paper.
I enjoyed the combination of culture, time (history) on this piece but I know it’s not completely there.
VAUX worship group
This group has a very unique way of exhibiting spirituality in worshiping and in urban space. From this text you can see more in-depth what they are all about. The focus is mainly on their Tone of Voice but have a look here
COMMON WORSHIP

A very strong design of the common worship with typography integrity. It just looks very simply, I admit it doesn’t look like any spiritual book until you read into the text.
The PDF file for to see the text on the pages.
I am beginning to want my Bible layout to look nothing like the Bible to appeal to larger people; with some typography difference.
EXPERIMENTS OF MY LAYOUT

I have highlighted the things I want to avoid when I do my Bible. I don’t want it to look like the usual, traditional Bible.
MY TAKE

This is my first attempt on layout. Making the big quotes slanted instant of making it straight like other traditional one’s

The layout is based on the previous grid.

This is the final, I think I have achieved everything I set to achieve. Right now it on book text paper. In the future, I would like to try other binding and other materials used, instead of leaving the job just to the typography. But am happy with the final outcome.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION & PROCESS
The purpose of this project was after making a Basla plane myself, I was to recreate the instruction manual.
During the process of making the plane making mistakes was the interesting thing through out my experience.
I increasely made mistake because once I read the first line of each step I assume I know what is required for me to do, which is why I felt someone like me needed an instruction manual that comes across authoritative. Something military and bossy.
While thinking of making my instructions I had to constantly watch military/army movies, programs e.t.c bacause I wanted to get myself familiar with the military vocabularies. The first attempted was beginning to work vocabulary but visualy exhibit nothing military. I could only do this by taking it to the extreme thinking of colours, military icons.

Some of my sketches -

This was the way I drew my construction images - like 3d.

After working out the layout and all necessary visuals, the vocabularies is a very important aspect of the idea. Even that I am not using it throughout my instruction manual but still it needs to be relevant and effective.
Some of the movies I watched try to work on the vocabularies.
THE KINGDOM
e.t.c.
The final outcome digitally

The final outcome was going to be as a silk screen poster, so this are the images I had to prepare. Because I was printing it in black and red I had to print separate screens both for the Fuselage and the wings -
Set up of screens -

Red screen Fuselage

Red Screen Wings

Black Screen Fuselage

Black Screen Wings
Am happy with the final outcome and also I did the silk screen because it gave it more print quality. Just abit of mistake with the alignment of the whole image, the edge of the red layout was falling off the screen.
Am still going to go try and print more during the week and try out other colours and perfect the print. This process has increase my skill of silk screen.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION & PROCESS
The value of words and its principles is that action should proceed after the word have been spoken especially in a case of pledges because as we know ‘action speaks louder than words. So many times people say things without recognising the worth/value of what they said or the meaning.
This project highlights the transactions in our words and promises treating it more as a currency. So I made a cheque booklet that allows people to enter their promises as they will enter or fill in their normal bank cheque. Tearing out the main writen part to the promisee and retaining the little slip as a reminder to the promiser.
At first the cheques come with pledges so the you just authorise it, but it wasn’t flexible enough, you don’y have it like that on the usual bank cheque.
I think this a material that can be use in the real world conext; I will use it, only that I believe the design could be better, something more persuaive and message driven. But the idea is still there.
PROCESS
SKETCHES

Trying to decide the visual of my cheque. Initially I wanted the cheque to come with its own pledges.
At this stage I have to start making the decision on how my cheque will operate. What’s the category; relationship, friendship, group, business social e.t.c. These are some of the things am think at this stage also trying to work on the visual.
Also on a bank cheque, you know if the cheque went through by the money reflecting in your account. And when it bounces both people involved in transaction will be informed one way or the other by the bank. So how will this work on my kind of cheque?

I begin to reason with the feedback, at the moment its not looking like a cheque and you cannot find in a cheque for the pledger.

This is the outcome the new cheque. At the moment, I am happy with this outcome. I can start think of what paper to use for the printing. I think the paper is an important aspect of the making the cheque; it has to be slick to write on sign and all that.

The Cheque in use

PROJECT DESCRIPTION & PROCESS
The purpose of this project was to eat a particular food according to how you are feeling or to ea something according to how you want to feel.
Foodimotion the title of the project begin with a research process to bring two parts of us humans that deals with our identity apart from the usual.
Chose food ask people to wrote something they like or dislike eating and use words to describe the taste or how they felt when eating that thing. I was going to use that info to produce a word menu, so food menu to word menu and you order your food my words. However, with advice from intern crit I settled to make an App which by choosing an emotion it provides foods that correspond that emotion.
The App is not interactive but definitely in the near future I will carry on working on the idea, possibly making it useable. The finish screens of the App is printed in this portfolio.
I was trying to ran away from photographing foods but my ideas need me to photography atleast some of the food.
On the mono and tri tone food poster, I was trying to bring in the colours related to the emotions back into the food. The toning works well but whenever one is working with food, it’s more real if the food looks desirable, which the toning is not allow. However, the views work well with adding colours to the food.
I have learnt quite about some food through this project, more importantly I have seen how it’s possibly to produces more outcomes for a data collection.
At the start I begin to think alot about culture/ language and how we live in general.
Before now, I knew we are all unique but never really acknowledge how REALLY unique we are to individual. I mean, if you think about it, even people that come from the same culture/country or speak the language some times have a different pronunciation. People have different accents, dialects, language e.t.c.
From this observation, I start discovering that it all depends on the way we translate things. Now, what can be linked to convey individuality, culture that will communicate uniqueness?
Language right, that’s the immediate responds linked to culture. But right now, I want to look closely at other things that are very strong part of culture. What about food or the way we write or learn our language (typography)? What about tribal identification? There are many things.
I asked people of what they like eating or drinking and words to describe the food or drink. From this answers, I wanted to create a word menu instead of a food menu, word dish, instead of food dish.
Very interesting responds

The process of getting people to write down something they like or dislike eating and give an emotion they felt eating that thing. I believe was a good starting point, so many interesting response. I like the individuality on the various response. From the response, I was thinking of creating words menus instead of food menus but the crit has allowed me to even push the idea, which is good.
From the first crit the advise includes;
All response are highly considered because they each contributed in the thinking process helping to develop the idea. Am beginning to believe this is one of those ideas that could be live and realistic to use and can exist for a long time.
YES! so I have gather some very vital info from friend, family e.t.c. Can’t even stop reading them.
The idea started directing towards making an some kind of application that help people decide on what to eat after entering their emotion at that moment. Ideally, it will give more than one options of food to choose form.
I will try keep this application idea simple, so many of them out there already, for example the one that help you find the ideal restaurant depending on what you want to eat and your location and so many more. But I don’t think there is anything like the one am thinking of making.
Other app I have look at in creating mine. Really there are no spec in creating an app, I have discovered this in my journey of creating mine. As long as there is meaning to how you are creating it and abit of cleverness. -

I saw this app called GoMeals from Sanofi-Aventis an healthcare company. Helps give info on food nutrition.
In particular I really like the simplicity of it and the whole intention and look. I think its something I will keep looking at making mine. How the colours goes round the plate already starts showing how I have start planning to create the emotion page of my app, possibly the end page also.
A video of app Go-meals. It’s a good one, go here>
Watching demo of apps allows me to work on one of the most important aspect of creating an app, the flow. The flow also help the interpretation of the app.
I started drawing how I want the app to look like as shown in my sketchbook.

Go here to see larger sketch
Well, I wasn’t actually going to make an application. I was going to make something that gives the user some knowledge on how to user; something like a mock-up. I’ve got to admit dough, there is alot of detailing thinking of creating an app, every step/stage matters alot and you have to consider the users through-out.
When developing the idea, I stumbled on a major challenge which could be long term as well. It’s that people’s emotions will always differ even if they eat the same thing. I didn’t get that from my research but speaking to people that was the major thing I couldn’t respond to.
After stumbling on a major struggle on the app idea, I was then advised to maybe look into so kind of Infographics which I have shown an example on last blog post. It promises to be an interesting way of showing my research material. One thing I want to achieve from the beginning was to create something that can be used in an everyday life, something that allows people to think abit more about what they eat and how it affects their emotions. Yes, the inforgraphic is a relevant starting point, however, how can this information be used?
For the mean time, these are other info graphic that deals with the same subject as me. And their style could influence how I approach mine.

Really like the simplicity of the diagram and the Poster on general. It also reflects the aspect on emotion and it comes in handy.

Another style of presenting the informations.
This is now my infographics

Clear way of showing the info. The emotions are colour coded.
I decide to go back and still try the App idea and experiment with it. Its better I try than not try at all.
Before proceeding onto the App, I did this fortune teller as I was thinking of how the App will work. Which you can see from here
I was trying to run away from, taking picture of food, fruits, vegetables e.t.c But couldn’t doing sure project without passing though this process. So I worked with the few items I could work with to expand the out comes.
Some of the photo of foods

Ofcourse I had alot to eat from after this section of cooking, dressing and photographing. Am happy with the outcome of the photos. I will like to work on other foods and vegetable, snacks e.t.c
I started working on the App and this is it started looking like -

The below are now the recent update on how it will look with abit explanation on the buttom of each screen.

I am very happy with the way the App functions, also like the way it is presented as it effectively explained. I was not to happy with the print for the final, the visual did not really show the design effect.
Am still going to continue working on the App, I think it has got alot of potential to become initial and exist. I will work on making it interactive and functional, just need to find someone good with the coding to help me with that aspect.
Beside the App, I have applied some of the emotion colours on the food/items using photoshop monotone and duotone

Anger

Apathy

Envy

Combination of all three emotions (Anger/Apathy/Envy)

The style of poster am putting the foods in colour.
The only thing with the outcomes of this project is that they are abit disconnected I feel seeing them individually/ separately both together it should work together. I’m happy with the outcomes but I will like to still work on the link between all the outcomes.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION & PROCESS
Publish: 1. To prepare and issue material (usually printed) for the public distribution or sale. 2. To bring to the attention; announce.
THE BIBLE (The Book of Genesis)
I chose this text in particular because I use it the most and I have always asked myself that how (in what way and format) will I like to read the Bible apart from the format available now.
Even non follower of the Faith Christianity acknowledge that The Book Of Genesis is about the beginning of the universe, how the Heavens and the Earth and everything in-between is been formed. God, Human, Space, Land e.t.c
For me, it’s quite interesting how everything happened in a space/atmosphere, so I wanted the text to also be experience in a Space. With this in mind the format can be directed which will take more and more experimentation to produce the right outcome.

Brainstorming of what The Book of Genesis is about…

Planning with the formatting and layout after deciding to work with the text on space.
Here some of the other print that I saw that established my idea even more.

More sketches on the format, how big do I have to go to fit the whole text from Genesis.

A0 Poster in my bedroom. Have it hung on my wall because I wanted to exhibit the intention of my idea, having the text in a space. Also want to always see it so I can mark any changes necessary.
I really did enjoy the process of making the poster but I felt its not pushed enough. I wanted to bring more things to it, just make the idea a bit more interesting.
In the final crit, I was advise to maybe bring colours to it, through highlighting certain words or quote of relevance to the text. Also I my tutorial group, they advised that I should work on giving the text abit more depth because right now its looking flat.
These are the changes I beginning to make on the one I hanged on my wall. Marking quotes, blue for the quotes of God and pink for human quotes.

More highlighting I did on my A0 poster. I noticed that if I was to make the same highlight on the final print, It might look very busy and loss the intention.
So on the final, I just decided to highlighted the quotes of God . I like how the red text (quotes of God) disappear as you move along the chapters.
I picked up my A0 poster of the Book of Genesis. With just the slight changes it’s look much better, quotes of God in red and verses in bold and chapters abit smaller.
In the mine time this are the photography of the previous one hung on my bedroom wall.
Searched on how other food or food item has been presented well, I saw this which I felt the visuals are very well presented and communicates well.
See it well from here
A collection of everything and anything inspiring
